A guide to: The Scottish Highlands

Updated: Nov 24, 2021

This past summer, I spent a week driving around the Scottish highlands, starting in Fort William, then heading north to Inverness, hoping over to the Isle and Skye then back to Manchester via Glasgow.

Ben Nevis

Standing at the tallest mountain in the UK, Ben Nevis is a challenge for all keen hikers. I however, tackled the mountain unprepared. Although the scenery was beautiful, the hike was a difficult, and not for the light hearted. After getting halfway to the top, we made the sensible decision to throw in the towel, and sheepishly made our way back down. Although we were defeated by Ben Nevis, if hiking is your thing, its a must do!

Arisaig

The gorgeous coastal town of Arisaig on the west coast of Scotland felt like a slice of heaven. The clear blue water and sunny skies felt like you had stepped into the Mediterranean. An afternoon spent swimming in the sea and enjoying a picnic on the yellow stand was a pleasant surprise with the unpredictable Scottish weather. On a sunny day in Scotland, Arisaig is the place to be!

Glasgow

After an action packed week exploring the Scottish highlands, a night in in busy Glasgow was a lovely change of scenery. A restaurant meal and a quiet hotel made a change from a camp stove and tent. The funky city is worth stopping by to break up the long journey back to Manchester.
